How to PREVENT Baby Acid Reflux

by Jeff Martin

Baby acid reflux is a condition that doctors have not yet completely researched and that is often a little misunderstood as well. From recent statistics, one fifth or so of the eight million babies born each year in the US suffer from acid reflux, and babies with handicaps that are developmental or neurological are even more at risk from this condition.

In a healthy person, there is a circular muscle acting as a valve at the junction of the stomach and the esophagus (called the lower esophageal sphincter) and stopping stomach acid from flowing back up the esophagus. Gastroesophageal reflux disease happens when that sphincter cannot retain the acids in the stomach. These then move into the throat sometimes as far as the larynx. In simple terms, GERD is a mechanical problem in the digestive system, which can be corrected. Numerous symptoms can result from GERD leading to complications like infections, pain, ulcers, difficulties in eating, vocal disorders and even cancer in the long run.

Baby acid reflux can be particularly difficult to diagnose and treat. Because an infant cannot give verbal expression to his or her feelings, it is difficult to determine if he or she is suffering from a medical problem. In addition, reflux condition is easy to confuse with usual vomiting in babies. For the first 3 to 4 months of an infant’s life, frequent vomiting happens in half of all cases, with a peak at 4 months. Vomiting is both painful and distressing when caused by acid reflux.

To correctly diagnose infant acid reflux, it is necessary to identify several further symptoms of acid reflux. Besides sporadic vomiting, these infant acid reflux symptoms include: infections of the middle ear, enlargement of the adenoids, pains in the abdomen, anemia, asthma, crying non-stop, awakening at night without reason, vomiting of blood (hematemesis), continual coughing, a high-pitched sound when breathing, repeated croup, resistance to feeding and inflammation of the nose and the sinus. The best solution for correct diagnosis of infant acid reflux is to have a specialist diagnosis performed by an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor or a gastroenterologist.

Possibilities for remedies to gastroesophageal reflux disease can be: medicaments, surgery and holistic programs. However, even for adult patients, surgery is rarely an option in normal situations. For baby acid reflux, neither medicament nor surgery is optimal answers. Medicaments may be sub-optimal in particular for infants for any of the three reasons below:

1. Medicaments treat the acid reflux symptoms but do not fix the fundamental cause of the condition.

2. Medicaments for GERD can impact an infant’s immune system, leading to weakness and vulnerability in immunity, possibly also leading to different health complications other than acid reflux as well as the worsening of acid reflux condition.

3. Medicaments for GERD can cause multiple secondary effects that are present but hidden in infants.

The optimal solution to baby acid reflux is a holistic one while taking into account an overall set of changes in diet and lifestyle. Strong support is lent to this concept by research done recently. Research demonstrated that a transition to soy-based formula from cow’s milk based formula gave infants a 40% recovery rate. Other research showed acid reflux symptoms juice products as an aggravating factor for infant gastroesophageal reflux disease. Altering feeding and sleeping position was also seen to be of benefit in treating baby GERD.

Acid Reflux Medications – Do They Work?

by Jeff Martin

You might be wondering if medicaments for acid reflux are really effective, when the priority should be the eradication of the real cause of your medical condition and if the respite that is temporary really compensates for the side effects. After all, drugs and medication for acid reflux are readily available. Adverts show them, they are sold over the counter, and most doctors happily prescribe them on the basis that the searing pain of heartburn will immediately cease.

Heartburn, also known as GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), comes about when the valve in the esophagus (the LES or lower esophageal sphincter) becomes weak and instead of acting one-way, lets stomach content flow back into the esophagus. Usually, after glutition, the LES opens to let food into the stomach before closing to prevent acid from returning into the esophagus. The backward flow of acid coming from this acid reflux is often noticed as a burning sensation that is called heartburn. Therefore, acid reflux patients often experience a particular burning feeling under the breastbone, often coming at night.

Acid reflux that is frequent and comes with one of its common symptoms of heartburn can be distressing and painful enough to impinge on your daily activities and severely damage the esophagus. Acid reflux that is neglected can badly attack the esophagus lining making for inflammation of long duration, leading even to cancer of the esophagus. Acid reflux is clearly a dangerous condition requiring immediate diagnosis and intervention.

Acid reflux medicaments are not necessarily the best remedy, even if they appear to be the most readily available treatment for heartburn. There are four principal sets of acid reflux medicaments for use with acid reflux:

1. Antacids are available in a variety of forms: liquid to drink, tablets to chew, chewing gum itself and so on. Their effect is from neutralizing acid in the esophagus and lasts for up to a few hours.

2. Alginates “wrap up ” the stomach contents and lessen reflux.

3. H2-receptor antagonists block your gastric system by imitating the production of acid in the stomach. Their effect can be for up to twelve hours and they begin to work half an hour to one hour after you take them.

4. PPI (Proton pump inhibitors) act as an obstacle to the cells in the stomach that produce the stomach acid.

All of these medicaments have a common component, even if they differ in the way in which they work, the duration and the nature of their effect:

1. They are of temporary effect. Acid reflux is complicated, being created by a group of factors of the environment, lifestyle and diet. However, most acid reflux medicaments focus on treating the immediate short-term causes of acid reflux, so they only bring temporary relief and sidestep the real causes of heartburn.

2. Long-term use of these drugs can also provoke a number of different secondary effects. PPI therapy is usually more harmful than good concerning secondary effects. Amongst the most frequent ones are bad headaches and diarrhea, and PPI has also been pointed to in cases of osteoporosis. The continual intake of antacids over time can heighten the damage from acid reflux: gastric acid is required for reasons of sound immunity and digestion and abuse of antacids harms both aspects.

Medication therapy for acid reflux is based on the classical approach that compared to the holistic approach does not look after the body while eradicating the symptoms of the disease. For this reason, most medications for GERD will not do more than give temporary relief amidst a host of side effects. On the other hand, alternative treatments such as homeopathic solutions, herbal remedies, changes in lifestyle and diet, and detoxification, will solve the internal cause of acid reflux to safely and effectively stop it from happening again.

Acid Reflux Treatment SECRETS

by Jeff Martin

Acid reflux treatments can be classified into three main classes: surgical operations; prescription or over-the-counter medication; and holistic, 100 per cent natural programs. Before giving a brief overview of different acid reflux treatments, I will explain the immediate physiological reasons of this medical condition.

The backwards flow (reflux) of the stomach acids can give a variety of symptoms: a salty taste in the mouth, coughing, pain in the chest, nighttime attacks of asthma and hoarseness. The main symptom of gastro esophageal reflux disease is a nagging burning feeling in the chest and the throat. This is produced when stomach acids reflux into your esophagus.

Acid reflux is, speaking technically, the result of valve mechanical failure, this valve being located at where the stomach and the esophagus meet. When the valve called the lower esophageal sphincter or LES fails to shut correctly, the gastric contents are thrown back up into the esophagus. Heartburn is then the result of the gastric acid burning into the esophageal lining.

As already mentioned, several different schools of thought exist for treating acid reflux, each approach handling the condition according to its own perception. This, surgery for GERD tackles the weakness of the LES, aiming to strengthen it to prevent acid from touching and inflaming the esophagus. When surgery is done, parts of the stomach are wrapped to encompass the lower esophagus so that refluxed gastric content will not touch the esophagus.

Sadly, these medicaments are typically only effective for temporary relief and occasion numerous secondary effects. In general, these acid reflux medicaments have the goal of reducing an excess of acidity in the stomach. Despite their limited effectiveness, medicaments, including H2 blockers, antacids and PPIs, whether prescribed or over-the-counter, are very popular for treating gastro esophageal reflux disease.

The big disadvantage of treatment proposed by conventional medicine for gastro esophageal reflux disease, which includes surgical and medicinal approaches, is that they only target the superficial or immediate reasons for acid reflux.

The correct remedy for acid reflux must cure the deeper problem instead of constantly attempting to stop or alleviate superficial physical symptoms. GERD is a complex condition resulting from a combination of factors including diet, lifestyle and behavior.

Holistic treatment, based on changes in lifestyle and diet (avoiding acid triggering foods, decreasing and controlling stress, improving sleep, etc.) as well as detox and the use of specific supplements derived from herbs, is the only solution aimed at treating the internal factors of acid reflux instead of the local causes. Different to other short-term solutions that try to focus on immediate relief from often painful and handicapping acid reflux symptoms, the holistic approach treats acid reflux in an all-natural and comprehensive way that can stop and block its recurrence securely and effectively.

Acid Reflux: How and Why

by Frank Robson

Large amounts of acidic foods are the biggest cause of Acid Reflux. Your digestive muscles help to transport the food during digestion down through the food pipe into the stomach and on to the intestines. In doing this there are valves that control entry, exit and any backflow. The muscles involved move the food by squeezing and relaxing the pipes.

The LES or Lower Esophageal Sphincter muscle controls food entering and any backflow into the esophagus or food pipe from the stomach.

Sometimes, due to weakening of these various muscles, food stays longer in the stomach. Malfunctioning valves, also manage to allow food into areas where it should not go, such as backward from the stomach into the food pipe. Of course, this backflow contains food, digested by stomach acids, and that’s why we get the sour warm sensation in our throats. In addition, sometimes, this acid is harmful to the walls of our food pipe, which end up getting scarred.

You may end up feeling like you have something stuck in your throat. With the poor digestive process and the weak muscles, other systems can be affected as well. Breathing problems are associated with excessive stress.

Contrary to popular belief, eating acidic foods does not cause one’s stomach, blood, or entire body to become more acidic. The stomach itself adds hydrochloric acid in the process of digestion. So acid reflux, is all about foods, which after processing in the stomach, have an acidic resultant residue.

Folks with Acid Reflux problems should avoid caffeine, peppermint, spearmint, alcohol, and even chocolate. Carbonated drinks are NOT a good idea for those with Acid Reflux symptoms. Avoiding of fatty foods, processed foods, and planned disinterest in things like fast food (hot dogs, pizzas, burgers), has been known to work positively for those worried about Acid Reflux.

You are what you eat. It’s all about maintaining the acid-alkaline balance in your body. You may eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, avoiding certain acidic fruits like oranges, tomatoes, grapefruit etc. Add multigrain items to your diet. Increase the proteins (to strengthen your muscles), and if you insist on being carnivorous, restrict your self to white meat and poultry, prepared in a low fat manner –

By exercising, watching what you eat and your stress levels and getting enough sleep, you can reduce your changes of acquiring Acid Reflux.

Acid Reflux Home Remedy that Scores RESULTS

by Jeff Martin

Even though acid reflux home remedy, when properly chosen and applied, can be effective in reducing most of the symptoms of this medical condition, it is important to note that acid reflux, also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a complex issue and the result of a combination of internal factors. Most remedies are not cures in themselves. However, selecting the right treatment and taking the correct doses have proved almost miraculous results proven for most GERD sufferers.

Let’s briefly examine the immediate biological reasons behind GERD as a medical condition, before discussing the acid reflux home remedies that can be applied and how to choose them.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease happens when stomach acid is regurgitated into the lower end of the esophagus, resulting in a distressful burning sensation. Normally, the gastric system is kept under control by a ring of muscle situated at the end of the esophagus. This muscle is the lower esophageal sphincter or LES. Food or drink traveling down the esophagus triggers opening of the LES so as to let the food and drink into the stomach.

Physiological degradation of the LES caused by a combination of influences such as inherited traits (which must be accepted) and several aspects of lifestyle and diet make up the “internal environment” bringing on GERD. It is to be regretted that most conventional treatments whether medicinal or surgical, target only the immediate cause acting locally to trigger gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The holistic program also offers a full methodology for tackling the root causes of acid reflux, which can be very simple to use. The majority of these holistic treatments are easily acquired at your local food store for application in the privacy of your home. As a bonus, holistic treatment brings acid reflux sufferers a wide choice of natural cures that have been demonstrated to provide almost immediate relief.

As an example, you can find relief for acid reflux symptoms by taking organic apple cider vinegar. Another treatment would be simple modifications to your diet. Eating smaller meals carries a strong recommendation for GERD sufferers from both doctors and alternative therapists. A big quantity of food is tougher to digest and needs much more time. By eating small and frequent meals, your digestive system gets a rest from heavy food intake. As yet another example, certain foods and drinks have been associated with increased risk of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease and should not be consumed. The list includes alcohol, coffee, citrus fruits, soda, chocolate, foods that are high in fat and dairy products.

Enhancing sleep, including changes to your sleeping position, has been demonstrated to effectively alleviate acid reflux symptoms. Quitting smoking may be bring considerable benefit, as the substances in cigarette smoke may act to relax the LES that then opens to cause reflux of stomach acid. Lifestyle changes is yet another category of answers to acid reflux.

Different herbal supplements are available to patients who want an immediate solution to relieve acid reflux symptoms via home remedies. These herbal supplements may bring distinct advantages in the short term. When you use them in conjunction with a set of holistic protocols to resolve the basic causes of acid reflux, you will have the possibility to stop the symptoms and permanently block its return.
