Prevent Heartburn, Know The Causes
Heartburn occurs when stomach contents pass the lower esophageal sphincter and enter the esophagus. The secretions of the stomach contain hydrochloric acid, which is highly corrosive. Due to the special lining of the stomach, it is not affected by the high acidity of these secretions.
The esophageal sphincter if not working correctly, is what causes heartburn to occur. There are many reasons as to why it would not be working correctly and why we get heartburn.
Age: Age is one reason to a failing esophageal sphincter. As we age, the esophageal sphincter becomes less and less effective and thus it is unable to prevent all acidic fluids from entering the esophagus from the stomach.
Overeating: Overeating can actually make the stomach to overfill; as the stomach can only expand so much. If this occurs then there is a high chance for heartburn as food is forced from the stomach into the esophagus region.
Lying down after eating: Remaining upright after eating will allow gravity to take its course; thus foods and fluids will run down towards the stomach and remain there. Lying down immediately after eating prevents gravity from having an effect. It can also increase the chances of foods escaping from the stomach into the esophagus.
Certain foods: There are foods that can actually cause the esophageal sphincter to become lax, making it less effective and allowing more fluids to reach the esophagus from the stomach.
Smoking: Smoking damages the lower esophageal sphincter.
Being overweight or obese: Excessive fat stores around the abdomen will increase abdominal pressure, resulting in food being forced the opposite way through the lower esophageal sphincter.
Drug consumption: There are some types of drugs and medications if taken in excess that can cause damage to the lining of the stomach. This is a bit different situation and is known as acid drug reflux as the symptoms of heartburn occurs in the stomach due to the damage of the stomach walls. Some drugs that causes such are those that contain aspirin.
