What Is Acid Reflux

The painful condition where the contents of the stomach want to flow back the way they came to cause heartburn is something we may all have experienced in our lives: it is called acid reflux. This is a condition relating to the digestive system and although referred to by other names almost all the symptoms are similar in nature. The problem arises from an upset in our stomachs digestive fluid (hydrochloric acid).It is the result of hydrochloric acid that is trying to flow back up the esophagus that causes the heartburn.

The stomach contains a valve which opens to allow food into it which should then close so stomach fluids cannot go back up the esophagus. The esophageal sphincter should close and trap the acid but when this does not happen and the acid escapes back up the digestive tract the condition of acid reflux or heartburn is the result.This condition is also known as GERD which is the shortened version of the correct medical name: gastroesophageal reflux disorder. Unfortunately the exact cause of acid reflux condition remains a mystery, but it is believed an individuals diet is primarily to blame,although overeating may also contribute because when you overeat, the stomach cannot keep up with the demand to process all the acids.

Eating large amounts of food at any meal can put a lot of pressure on your abdominal walls.the release of this pressure results in the stomach acids trying to flow back up the digestive tract. Since this valve protects your esophagus from your stomach acid, you need to take care this valve does not allow digested acidic food to pass back into the asophagus.to help with this condition, adjustments need to be made with regards to the size of meals consumed, which need to be smaller but more frequent. This situation can be a problem for the health of the body as the stomach, esophagus and mouth all need to be in good working order.this is because the stomach is not only responsible for breaking down our food but also for preparing this food to be converted to specific nutrients that every person needs.

While an immediate solution may be to use the well advertised acid calming drugs available they are not designed for long term usage,however, these can interrupt natural body processes and cause other health problems. It may take a while but the best solution is to make adjustments to your drinking and eating habits which may have caused the acid reflux condition,the idea is not to overload your stomach, which will give it time to recover. It may take a while but if the number of times you experience heartburn reduces, you may be able to enjoy some of the foods you stopped eating; all the while remaining conscious of the need to take things slowly and not place stress on your stomach again.

Lifestyle changes extend beyond those of just eating habits as other contributing factors to acid reflux can be:

Regular smoking, Allergies to certain foods, Certain medical drugs, Excessive alcohol consumption, Having a sleep after eating a meal

All of these factors are within your control and it only requires a change of habits and behavior on your part,the thought of reducing the incidents of heartburn should be sufficient incentive. Determination on your part to reduce the number of episodes of acid reflux is all that is required.no-one can force you to change but improvements to your life are within your control.

Acid Reflux and Sore Throat

Although many people don’t know it, acid reflux sore throat is very real. When you consider what reflux is, it shouldn’t be that surprising. It really is just a matter of how severe the reflux is.

To begin with a definition, acid reflux means that acid from the stomach is backing up into the esophagus. The actual acid is HCl and as you might imagine is quite irritating to tissues that were meant to handle it such as the lining of the esophagus.

This is typically limited to the far end of the esophagus immediately next to the stomach. the most common symptom is a burning sensation commonly referred to as heartburn.

However if there’s a lot of reflux, for example if somebody 80 really large meal and the stomach is very full, the acid can back up even farther. In that case people can have what amounts to an acid burn all along their esophagus and even into the back of the throat.

I think is pretty easy for you to imagine that if you swallowed acid you might get a sore throat as a result. The acid backing up from the stomach does the same thing. Even worse, it can spill over into your windpipe and really cause problems.

In addition to having a sore throat, another symptom that goes along with stomach acid reach the back of the throat is an unusual slightly metallic taste in the mouth.

I think you can see now that is not so surprising that heartburn and a chronic sore throat can have the same underlying cause. Someone that has a persistent sore throat because of acid reflux has a particularly severe case and it’s very important that they get treatment. This is especially important to prevent possible lung complications.

Acid Reflux Cure Facts

It seems that every day you hear about a new acid reflux cure. The fact is we have more treatment options available than ever before and so the chances of getting relief from acid reflux are better than ever.

Acid reflux simply means that acid from the stomach backs up (refluxes) into the esophagus. Since the esophagus doesn’t have the same protective lining the stomach does this causes damage and the burning pain we experience as heartburn.

Considering the causes, the logical approach to curing reflux involve avoiding triggering episodes, minimizing the reflux and neutralizing the acid if an episode does occur.

Episodes of reflux often triggered by eating. Sometimes it’s the particular type of food, such as acidic foods. Other times it’s the volume of food a person eats that creates the problem.

Common sense tells you that eating small meals and staying away from common trigger foods such as tomato sauce well prevent problems.

Another mechanical factor to remember is gravity. If you’re sitting upright or standing, the stomach content has to go uphill to reflux into the esophagus. On the other hand if you lie down when you stomach is full, it’s much easier for the stomach acid to flow into the esophagus.

This effect of gravity is why many people have problems with reflux in the middle of the night. It also suggests another aspect of acid reflux cure. You can help the problem by avoiding eating for several hours before going to bed. Also, if you elevate the head of the bed or put a wedge under your mattress gravity will continue to help keep stomach content where it belongs.

Aside from reducing the reflux itself, and other acid reflux cure is to neutralize the acid so it doesn’t damage the esophagus if reflux does occur. The first medications to do this were antacids. These are either liquid or tablets that you swallow. And they act to chemically neutralize the stomach acid.

For the last couple of decades, we’ve had medications that prevent the acid from being produced in the first place. The first class of these drugs were called H2 blockers. An example is Tagamet. New medications block even more acid from being produced.

Obviously, this is not a detailed report on all the acid reflux cure is available, but I think this is enough to give you a broad overview.
